Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of RP based group art therapy program on alcoholics¡¯ depression, capability to cope with stress, and alcohol abstinence self-efficacy by applying the program with alcoholics. In this study, 22 patients hospitalized for alcoholism at B psychiatric hospital located in S city were recruited as the subjects after they consented to participate. Among them, 12 patients were assigned to the experimental group and 10 to the control group. Additionally, the RP-based group art therapy program and the RP cognitive therapy program were conducted with them for a total of 15 sessions, twice weekly, for 60 minutes per session. For verifying the results, pretest-posttest was performed for depression, capability to cope with stress, and alcohol abstinence self-efficacy. SPSS WIN 23.0 program was used to analyze the results through pretest-posttest scores using independent sample t-test, covariance analysis, and mixed variance analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, the pretest-posttest scores on depression of the experimental group showed a significant decrease, and the effect was found at a level equivalent to the pretest-posttest change in the control group scores. Second, the pretest-posttest scores on capability to cope with stress of the experimental group showed a significant increase, and the effect was found at a level equivalent to the pretest-posttest change in the control group scores. Third, the pretest-posttest scores on alcohol abstinence self-efficacy showed a significant increase, and the effect was found at a level equivalent to the pretest-posttest change in the control group scores. Based on this, RP-based group art therapy is expected to be widely used to prevent the recurrence of alcoholism with an easier therapeutic approach for alcoholics who are difficult to participate in RP cognitive therapy programs due to the deterioration of cognitive, emotional, and linguistic functions due to the nature of alcoholism.
